Are there Prozac alternatives for my cat's stress and urination?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 years and 6 months old | 19 lbs

My cats on Prozac for about a month or so. It's great as it calms him down and he recently had a stress cystitis issue. Problem is since starting it he only urinates every other day and a huge amount. I researched it and it's apparently a thing with Prozac and cats. Is there any other option besides the Prozac to help him be calm and avoid stress issues? I've got feliway already. Also he's not blocked and is acting normal, playing, eating, etc. I just don't like the Prozac risks. Thanks.

I would discuss this issue with your veterinarian. We definitely do not want to stop the Prozac suddenly as he could develop withdrawal symptoms. Other supplements that could help include Zylkene or a prescription cat food like c/d® Multicare Stress Feline. Acupuncture is another alternative method that may help with stress and urinary issues in cats.

This would be a question to ask your veterinarian since he or she is more familiar with Bennie's history. That said, prescription anti-anxiety medications ate used successfully in cats. You can also try a pheromone product, such as Feliway spray or plug in diffusers, to decrease any anxiety. A supplement, such as Dasuquin for Cats ( https://www.dasuquin.com/en/dasuquin-sprinkle-capsules-for-cats/ ), may also promote bladder health.

I like to use Feliway spray, Royal Canin urinary Calm diet, anti-anxiety meds like Lorazepam as-needed, pain meds like long-acting buprenorphine, Zylkene, and sometimes antidepressants like Clomicalm or generic Prozac. All of these things work synergistically to reduce stress for many cats, and you can try all or one or two at a time.
