Coco has arthritis in his left hind leg. He's had two recent flare ups when scratching at his ears. He's had the arthritis for a while now and the vet prescribed Novox, and I've been giving him an oatmeal bath with vitamin E and half of a Benadryl for itching and it seems to help. We crate him at night but I still worry about his hip. Is there anything I can do or is it just something that comes with age? He's been doing a lot better, but I just would like to know what would help.

I am sorry to hear about Coco. The Novox should help some with his arthritis as it is an NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as us using ibuprofen. If it isn't providing adequate pain control there are other options we can try in addition to the NSAID. These would include Glucosamine Chondroitin joint supplements such as Dasuquin, fatty acid supplements which can decrease inflammation in the body, injections that can aid in joint health (Adequan), and additional medications such as gabapentin, tramadol, and amantadine. I would talk to your vet about these options to figure out what is best for Coco. You can read more about this at http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry Coco is in such pain. Sounds like he is on some good pain medications, but may benefit from a stronger pain medication such as another opioid like buprenorphine or hydromorphone to help control his pain levels. Your veterinarian will be able to prescribe either of these medications for Coco so he feels a bit more comfortable. Cold laser therapy is another therapy that may be available through your veterinarian to help control pain. Hip dysplasia, sometimes, does require surgery to help fix so Coco can live a more normal pain free life. I hope this helps!
