My dog gets depressed when my ex leaves. What can I do to help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 15 lbs

My ex comes to see and play with our dogs but every time he gets ready to leave Daphne seems to know and gets sad and she stays sad doesn't do anything for a few days. Should I stop him from seeing them if it's making her depressed everytime he leaves. The second she see him she her playful self. It's killing me to see her not herself. I've played with her spend alone time with just her but it's like she wants and miss him. What could I do to help her get out of this depression?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about how things are going with you and Daphne. These situations are always tough on everyone, including the pet. Have you thought about sharing her and letting her stay intermittently with your ex? Might be a good solution if you can both agree on the terms. That way she will never be in this situation again, as both of you will be spending time with her separately. I hope this helps. And I wish all of you and Daphne a long and happy life.
