New stray dog won't pee or poop after 3 days. Is he stressed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

Took in a stray, looks mostly dashshund. Dog will not go to the bathroom. Have had him for about 3 days. Has not peed or pooped in our yard, or in the house. Has been very mopey. Has eat a little and drank a little (not near normal for a dog his size. Took to the Vet, and got a clean bill of health. Any suggestions? What could be happening?

I am sorry that Rusty seems to be having a difficult time asjustinng to his new surroundings. If you have taken him into the vet already and received a clean bill of health I would believe that his issues are more likely psychological now. It is hard to know what Circumstances Rusty was living in before you brought him home. He may need extra time to feel secure and comfortable in your home. I would try some of the following Tactics to help him; Two walks a day (even if short) Special meal of boiled boneless chicken breast, steamed rice and cooked carrits Thunder coat

Interactive games such as fetch and hide and go seek Interactive toys or chews during times while you are away White noise As much love and attention as Rusty will tolerate will all help him feel more welcome and settled. If Rusty still will not eat, will not pass any feces or urine or seems down, depressed or in pain, I would take him back to the veterinarian. I wish you both best of luck in sharing your home and your lives.
