My semi-feral cat avoids traps. How can I finally catch her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 1 day old | 5.5 lbs

I've been trying to catch a semi-feral cat for 3 months. I caught the kittens, the male and the sister to the one left here. I've tried live traps, carriers with food in them, taming, not feeding for days and I called the SPCA who sent a specialist out to give me more ideas. I adopted her sister and want this one too. Do you have any ideas that won't cost me a fortune?

It can be very difficult to catch a feral cat that has already been trapped. Once they have been caught, they learn how to avoid being caught again. You can continue to try leaving different types of cat and human food in a live trap (tuna, wet cat food, dry cat food, chicken breast), and cover it with a blanket so it is dark and "safe" in there. Try to avoid touching the trap more than necessary so it doesn't have human scent on it. You can also continue trying to feed the cat in hopes that she learns to trust you. However, not all outdoor cats want human interaction, and she may not be a very good candidate for a house cat.
