My cat has diabetes. Is a fructosamine test really necessary?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 14 years and 4 months old | 13 lbs

My 14 yr old cat went to the vet for litter box issues was diagnosed with diabetes due to high glucose in her blood & urine. I am very scared/worried about this, and want to do everything possible for my cat, but am on a very tight budget. Unfortunately I don't even trust this new vet. several things she has said have made me feel uneasy like that she cares more about $$ than my cat. She now wants to do a $68 fructosemine test to "confirm" the diagnosis after $360 already. Do I need it???

I'm sorry that Pepper isn't doing well! Yes, I do recommend having the fructosemine test done. Cats can have glucose in their urine due to stress, and this test will tell the vet if the glucose in her urine is due to stress or if she truly has diabetes. I hope this helps!
