My dog is food aggressive. How do I feed multiple dogs safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Female | unspayed | 90 lbs

I have a 3 1/2 year old Doberman pinscher female and she is very greedy when it comes to food with other dogs present. When i feed her and her 1 1/2 year old son she will not let him eat his food, she will eat from her bowl and run to his bowl and eat and go back and forth until she finishes both bowls. If i feed them seperate her son will not eat if she is not physically present. I have to be there to keep her from eating his food and he will eat but sometimes he doesn't eat even if im there.

This is not a terribly uncommon problem and should be somewhat easily resolvable. I would consider feeding the dogs in an area that you can keep them separate but still in visible contact with one another. If you are able to keep the two apart with a baby gate that could probably work fine. Another option would be to feed one of them in a crate, which is actually what I do with one of my own dogs. Another option might be to feed your female with a bowl that requires her to eat more slowly. This might give your other pup some additional time to eat in peace. This has the potential to backfire however, if Xena gets annoyed by the difficult bowl and just decides that her son's is easier to eat from. Hope this helps and at least gives you some ideas about how to resolve the issue. If none of this seems possible, you may need to consider some additional training for Xena including some commands to force her to come to you when she is called, and to divert her attention away from the other food bowl.
