My dog eats dangerous shells. How to stop her and make her drop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dalmatian | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 55 lbs

What a great idea! Not sure if this is a vet question - our 1 yr old Dalmatian female will eat anything, especially some horse chestnut shells that the squirrels drop in our yard. She loves broken jagged ones. Despite best efforts, she will get the one we missed and getting her to drop it is not easy. Afraid she'll swallow a piece. How can we best break this habit and also safely get it out of her mouth - she's a very sweet girl but also stubborn and feisty.

What cute pictures! I would recommend working with Sparky on basic commands of sit, stay and come. Than once she maters these start adding drop to the list. I would do the training some where outside of the house or at least not around the shells she likes to chew on. Also, I recommend short sessions of training often since dogs will get bored after a while. Once she has mastered the skills you can start using them in the yard with the shells. If she picks one up tell her to come, sit and drop it. Than at that time you can give her a treat as a positive reward. Also, I would try to just keep the yard cleaned up to the best of your ability. Hope that helps!
