My senior dog's leg is swollen and he won't bear weight. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | unneutered

Saturday I started to pet sit while the owner is away on a cruise. I was not in the room so I am not exactly sure of what happened but it seems like while trying to get in his cage he got his leg caught and started crying when I ran in the room he was biting at his leg and left one deep puncture wound. Today, his leg is swollen and he seems to have trouble bending it and putting a lot of weight on it. He's made some improvement, as before he could barely stand. He's a male senior Jack Russell

It could be swelling from the puncture site where is causing cellulitis or if he struggled while trying to get free he may have fracture his leg. The lack of movement is from the swelling but the nonbweight bearing is concerning. Because he is old and they tend to take longer to heal, taking him to his vet is best to make sure nothing is broken and he gets medicine for pain and antibiotics if needed
