My dog has skin marks, but he's on flea/tick meds. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 7 months and 8 days old | 12 lbs

My pup has some kind of bite marks all over him, I thought it could be flea bites but he's on Bravecto and wears seresto collar. He goes to the dog park 3 or 4 times a week, we also go running next to a bayou. I'm not sure what's biting him or if it's a reaction to something he scratches but not all the time. The marks don't go away, it's been about 3 or 4 weeks since I noticed the first one and he just keeps getting more and more.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear Bam Bam is having some skin problems. Shouldn't be flea or tick related since you have that covered. Skin problems can of course be caused by external parasites including mites, bacteria, fungus, allergies, irritants, etc. Best thing to do is to have Bam Bam evaluated by your vet unless these spots resolve on their own. Your vet can do a physical exam and perform skin tests if necessary (skin scrape, fungal exam, fungal culture, tape prep, cytology, etc) or any other tests to determine what is going on with her skin. Once that is determined, a treatment course can be developed. I hope Bam Bam gets well soon.
