My floppy-eared puppy has itchy ears and brown residue. How to clean?

We have a floppy eared mixed breed puppy whose ears are extremely itchy at night, it keeps him up. My husband thinks it's yeast, and there is a brown residue in the ear canal. Can you recommend a home remedy or treatment for us to clean out his ears and prevent itching? He won't sit still for a picture unfortunately. photo attached is from a google image search. It's not him, but the substance looks the same. He just doesn't have as much of it, he has about half the amount in that image per ear. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 8 months old | 35 lbs

I would ideally recommend a veterinary visit as ear infections are often times a mixed population of yeast and different bacteria. Or ear mites may play a role as well. You can try using an over-the-counter ear cleaner every other day for a few days but if that does not cleared up a veterinary visit for ear cytology and medication is recommended.
