My cat's eye is red and swollen. Could it be fleas or an injury?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Female | spayed | 6 years and 11 months old | 2.5 lbs

Hello sir/ma'am, My cats left eye is red and I think she was scratching herself with something sharp and got her eyes scratched on the inside.. also she has fleas and she's taking the (advantage) drops monthly.. so you think this is from fleas or she might be scratched her eyes? And what do you recommend for a medicine for her eyes??

Poor girl. Yes I do see the swelling there of the left eye. She may or may not have scratched her eye b/c of the fleas, but it definitely isn't helping the situation. You will unfortunately have to visit your vet to get the prescribed medication she needs to have her eye treated for, because there are no over the counter eye meds for pets. I would recommend topical Revolution to prevent fleas in cats, this product is also given through your vet and is highly effective. I would also recommend treating your home for fleas with a flea fogger from your local Lowe's or Home depot. So its best to schedule an appt within the next day or 2 to get Qumar the medications she needs to get well. I hope that Qumar is able to get all her issues resolved soon. Best wishes and take care.

I am so sorry to hear that Qumar is having trouble with his eyes. From the excellent picture you have provided they both seem red, inflamed and have discharge. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Qumar to prevent scratching or rubbing. It is possible that Qumar scratched his eyes on accident while scratching for fleas. Because eye concerns with cats, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly in cats I would have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue as soon as possible. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. I hope this answer was helpful and that Qumar feels better soon. Warmest regards to you both!
