Dehydrated hamster: Is diluted fruit juice safe, or what else works?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Female | unspayed

My local vet told me that my hamster was dehydrated and that I should try putting orange/apple juice in a separate water bottle very diluted. I thought hamsters couldn't have citrus..? Is this safe and if there another better way to get her to drink? Thanks!

Hello there! Diluting the juice will cut down the acidity, so it should be safe for Willow. Try a 1:10 dilution to start (1 part juice, 9 parts water), and use an all-natural juice, preferably one without too much added sugar. Good luck, and if she remains dehydrated, please consider bringing her to the vet as she may need some fluids under the skin. Best of luck, and I hope Willow gets well soon!
