My anxious cat bites. Are there anxiety meds in treat form?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 18 lbs

My 6 year old cat bites me on my arm. He lives with me and his litter sister, who he bites on back of neck. I hear there is a new medication that is in a treat and the cat chews and swallows it. The medication is for his apparent anxiety. My vet tried Prozac pill but he spit it out . I'm desperate and am afraid I'll have to have him put to sleep. I'm 78 years old and I'm afraid of him.

I don't know of a specific medication for anxiety in treat form, but there are treats with supplements for anxiety, the one I used most of is called Compoaure. However your vet can use a compounding pharmacy to get Prozac in treat form as well as that is likely going to be more effective than a supplement.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! An anti-anxiety medication can be considered. Something else that can be considered is a product that can help decrease any stress a cat may have and may help correct behaviors. This is called Feliway which you may obtain online or at your local pet store. Good luck and have a good night!

There are many different classifications of medication that can be used to help treat anxiety in pets. Some are benzodiazepines, such as Valium. Some antidepressants have been found to be beneficial in pets. Some are medications that may also have uses for seizures, some are sedatives and even some anti-histamines may have anxiolytic affects. Your veterinarian will evaluate your pets health and behavior to make the best recommendation for your pet. Some medications are meant for daily use with behavior modification and others may just be for occasional, as needed use. But without modifying environment and training medications alone have limitied efficacy.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, they are all human medications used off label in animals. There are long acting drugs like prozac, zoloft, clomicalm, etc and then short acting medications like trazadone, acepromazine, xanax, etc. These drugs need to be prescribed by your Vet and work best with behavioral training. I hope this helps and I wish you and Buddy the best!
