Worms in dog poop, or just fly larvae? My dogs are on Interceptor.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 1 year and 6 months old | 40 lbs

I have two boxers (2&7) while recently cleaning up the back yard I noticed what looked like could maybe be some type of worm in their stool. Given it had been in the sun I thought maybe it could just be larva from flys but I'm not sure if I should be worried. Both dogs are on a monthly heartworm pill (interceptor). Is this something to worry about, is there anything I can do to make sure they are free of worms? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The longer feces sits outside on the grass the more likely free living nematodes will come to the stool or flies will lay eggs that become maggots. Interceptor is a great way to deworm dogs monthly. But to be 100% sure that your dogs do not have parasites, collect a fresh stool sample from BOTH dogs and drop them off at your vet to have them check for worms. Good luck!
