My dog vomited and has loose stool after eating roast. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Mastiff | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 200 lbs

My English Mastiff vomited some liquid yesterday morning. his next stool was normal. Overnight he had very loose stool but not really diarrhea all over the living room. After putting him on the porch to clean the carpet, he vomited some more liquid. Very little food particles in these vomiting episodes. He seems fine other than this and we are withholding food and water for 12 hours. He ate some roast yesterday which is out of the ordinary.

Sorry to hear that Atlas isn't feeing well. Holding off on food for 12 hours is a great idea, but I would still offer a little bit of water so he doesn't get too dehydrated. If he is still vomiting or having diarrhea, definitely take him to the vet. Sometimes, dogs can have gastroenteritis from eating a food they are not used to. Unfortunately, they can also get something called "pancreatitis" that can be a lot more serious and requiring medications. It also may be completely unrelated to the roast, for example, something like GI parasites. Your vet would start with a physical exam, and from there may recommend some tests or treatment. In all cases, if a 12-hour food fast doesn't solve the problem, it's best to get him in to the vet sooner rather than later before he gets really dehydrated. Best of luck!

I'm sorry to hear of your concerns with Atlas. It is possible that the roast he ate yesterday caused from inflammation within his GI tract. Fatty foods can cause irritation to the pancreas resulting in vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. While withholding food is recommended, I would not recommend withholding water. Vomiting and decreased appetite can lead to dehydration so it is important he has access to water. You can offer only small amounts of water every 30 to 60 minutes if he is drinking so much he is causing himself to vomit. If he is vomiting despite these restrictions, he should be seen by a veterinarian. They may recommend X-rays and or blood work to better determine what treatment is needed. If he does well, I would recommend starting with a bland diet when you reintroduce food. Feeding small amounts more frequently will help ease him back into routine.
