Why is my dog still itching with red paws and hair loss after treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 77 lbs

Hello, My almost 4 years old chocolate labrador Mocha has been itching a lot recently. I discovered rednesses underneath her paws and loss of hair around the eyes and elbows (see pictures). We already know about her allergies/dermatites and she's been treated for them, however the symptoms described above have not disappeared after treatment. Thank you,

I'm sorry to hear Mocha is having skin issues. There can be a variety of underlying reasons for the skin lesions you are seeing, including allergies (breaking through normal treatment), a skin infection (bacterial or fungal), skin parasites (fleas or mites), or an underlying health issue. I would recommend she be seen by her regular veterinarian to try to determine the underlying cause of her lesions and any diagnostics (skin scrapes or cultures) that may be needed to get her on any treatment (antibiotics, anti-itch medications, parasiticide) that she may need to help resolve the issue. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Mocha! I like Omega 3 fish oil for skin problems. It may not take care of the entire problem but will help. I would also try a medicated shampoo and conditioner. I would consider changing Mocha's food. If she has a food allergy, chicken is the most common offender. Try a food that contains fish, venison, beef or duck. Be sure that you do not give her human food or treats that contain chicken during the food trial. You can also try antihistamines to control her itch. I hope this helps! http://pet-supplies.drsfostersmith.com/search?w=nordic%20naturals%20omega-3%20oil https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=27307 https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=35790 https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/zyrtec/
