Dog sick on kibble, better on rice. Is it her food or something else?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 7 months old | 70 lbs

My dog has had diarrhea and been vomiting on and off for a week. I started feeding her hamburger and rice and she was better immediately. After four days I put her back on her normal dog food that she's been eating for years and within 48 hours her symptoms started again. So I stopped giving her dog food and gave her hamburger and rice. Once again as soon as I gave her hamburger and rice her symptoms stopped. Does this mean its her food or could it be something else?

There is a good chance she has an absorption problem, preventing her from eating her regular dog kibble. Some possible causes of this are intestinal masses, a pancreas problem, or a lymphatic issues just to name a few. I would consider placing her on an easily digestible vet approved food such as Royal Canin Ultamino, Royal canin vegetarian or Hill's Z/D. The hamburger and rice can be continued if you also add in vegetables to make it a well balance nutritional diet. Here is a website link with free recipes you can try to start off. www.balance-it.com Best wishes getting tot he root of Bell's problem. If she doesn't seem to be resolving, or if you want more information on her GI tract, then its best to schedule an abdominal ultrasound soon. Best wishes sorting through things with Bella. I hope she stops her vomiting episodes soon.
