Why does my dog moan and raise head after taking Comfortis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 2 years and 1 month old

I've been giving Bruce Comfortis for fleas, following all the package directions. He doesn't exhibit any side effects listed, but every month after I give it to him (usually about 6-7 hours after the dose) he raises his head so his nose is straight in the air, moaning a bit. This lasts for 1-2 hours, and then he seems fine. Is this something serious, or normal? I couldn't find anything about it online.

Hi there! Bruce's behavior is very interesting, and understandably concerning. Comfortis hasrarely had some documented neurologic side effects in certain animals, but I have not seen or heard of this specific reaction. I highly recommend that you let your vet know about the behavior, and call Elanco's (manufacturer of Comfortis) adverse event reporting line, as they like to keep track of any possible negative outcomes from their drugs. They may even be able to give you some insight on the behavior, and whether or not other people have been reporting it. Their number is 1-888-545-5973. Comfortis is a great product, and it sounds like Bruce is no worse for the wear even after these bouts. Involving your vet will help you decide if it's worth it to keep using the Comfortis, or to perhaps switch to a different product. Good luck, and I hope that Bruce stays happy and healthy!
