My dog has a light brown spot on his nose. Should I be concerned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Coton de Tulear | Male | neutered | 3 years and 6 months old | 8 lbs

My 3.5 y/o male Coton de Tulear has a light brown spot at the base of his nose. It is flat and doesn't seem to bother him. I just noticed it. Last week, he was groomed and also had to be put under anesthesia for a dental procedure. I also found a very small scab on his back within the past couple of weeks, but it has gone away and was not sensitive to touch. The vet advised that as long as it's not raised, to apply Neosporin 2x/day for 5 days, but I'm wondering if I should be more concerned.

I agree with your vet. I would not be too concerned at this time. It is not uncommon for dogs to lose pigment to the nasal area without it being a significant problem. It could be from an injury and if it is, the nasal planum does not always go back to normal color - it may stay that way. If it gets worse, meaning the discolored area gets larger or if it starts to get crusty, then I would recommend some testing like a biopsy of the tissue. I hope this helps. Try not to be too worried just yet! :) I think Bentley will be just fine!
