How to comfort an adopted dog grieving the loss of a loved one?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Male | neutered | 11 years and 9 months old | 110 lbs

We recently adopted my late aunt's older dog. How can we support him in his grief?

Hmmm, my answer got cut off. Stick with the same food and treats if possible. If he has a dog bed he's used to, keep that available for him. Finally, if you have access to your aunt's clothes, it may help to give him an article of her clothes that she frequently wore that might still have her scent. The scent will eventually wear off, but in the meantime he'll be adjusting to his new environment and routine. The fact that you're asking tells me you want to do right by him, and I think you (and he) will do fine! Good luck, hope this helps!

    Hello, I'm sorry to hear about your aunt. Dogs are generally quite adaptive, and although it will be normal for Rusty to go through a transient period of mild anxiety or depression during the transition, he should do fine adapting to a new "normal." Offer him lots of love and attention, give him interesting distraction such as nice walks, and if you know what your aunt fed him previously, try to stick with the same food
