My dog has a big belly with fluid. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 3 years and 2 months old | 22 lbs

Well tofi''s a shaggy dog and only about 3 and a 1/2. He recently got a big belly and the doc said smthing about fluid build up in his belly but it has just been a month since his belly started to get big. The doctor said he only has 2-3 days to live and gave some medication. He didn't do any checkups that needed to be done. He just looked at him and made his assumption, I don't trust his judgment he's been wrong before. Help!!

You do need more testing to find out what is going on. It can be fluid build up but you need blood work and an ultrasound to see if the fluid is leaking from the intestines or liver congestion secondary from heart disease. sometimes a diet change can help or the fluid may need to be drained to have it evaluated for cells. Without a diagnosis and more testing it is hard to help you further
