Dog fight injuries: My Chihuahua won't eat or drink. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 2 months old | 20 lbs

My 9-year old Chihuahua got into a fight with a large Husky about 2 days ago. He has received some scratches and bruises but it looks like his back got messed up. He refuses to eat or drink but he can walk (albeit, a bit slowly) and wag his tail a bit. Our family is too poor to afford a vet and there aren't any free vet clinics in our area. I'm worried about my dog. What's wrong with him and is there a way to help him?

If there are any wounds, clean then with mild soap and water and keep neosporin on it to minimize the infection. He is walking... this is a good sign!! You can try chicken or rice, Gatorade, low fat yogurt. Or chicken broth to help stimulate his appetite. He is in pain and that can decrease their appetite so you may have to syringe feed or place some in his mouth to help him. Generally day 2-3 is the worst for pain and should improve from there. Other than that, rest is all else you can do
