What to do when my senior overweight dog is a very picky eater?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Male | neutered | 35 lbs

I have a senior male Lhasa. He is getting really picky about eating. He gets kibble from the vet. I boil grass fed chicken and beef. Sometimes I cook the beef in organic olive oil. Sometimes I bake the chicken. He turns his nose up. He's off gizzards, hearts for awhile. He eats them sometimes than stops. He's so spoiled. What to do? He's current on all shots, up to date on visits to the vet. Plus, he's over weight.

It sounds like ZZ has you very well trained! If he is overweight he is likely getting plenty of calories even if he doesn't seem to like what you offer him. You may need to tolerate a few days of him not eating, but I would go back to the original kibble and stick with it so that he will learn to eat what you offer him.
