Why is my 8-month-old Corgi mix defiant about house training?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

8 month old Corgi mix. Very bright, but defiant at times, is not responding to house training. It appears that he knows what we want but ignores it on purpose. What next?

Housetraining can be a difficult process for some dogs, but the thing to remember is consistency is key! Take Atticus outside to where you want him to eliminate and say the same phrase (such as "go potty") every time. Wait 2-3 minutes to allow him time to go. If he does, wait until he is finished completely and then heap on the positive reinforcement (treats, praise, etc.). If he doesn't go, bring him back inside, place him in his crate, wait 5-10 minutes and then repeat as many times as necessary. Stick with a consistent routine and he will get there! Good luck!
