Why does my dog eat paper? Is it a deficiency, playful, or concerning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 35 lbs

My female boxer has an attraction to paper products--napkins, Kleenex, writing paper, etc. She devours them. Is there a diet deficiency she is responding to, or just part of her playful nature. Should I be concerned?

This is a very common problem, especially for puppies and young dogs - they just seem to enjoy ripping up and eating paper. This is not normally a sign of any kind of dietary deficiency or health problem, just something that they do for fun :) I would try and keep paper products put away out of her reach, since ingesting a large amount of paper could potentially cause some stomach upset or even an obstruction.
