How do I know if my Gouldian finches are a male and female pair?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi, I was told from a pet store that I have one male(cock) and one female(hen). Can you tell me from if I have a pair (M-F). I notice they both sing. I do know for sure that the black head one jumps up and down but I think the red head does as well. I would like a pair. I'm confused.

Gouldian finches are sexually dimorphic (meaning the color patterns are different between the male and female birds) so if your birds are the ones in these photos or they look identical to them, then it would appear you have a male and a female bird. Both sexes can make noises/calls, so perhaps you are hearing both birds making noises, though the males are the ones that have what people call a "song".
