Best age to neuter my mini dachshund with undescended testicle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 28 days old | 15 lbs

I am wondering the best age to Desex my male mini dachshund? He is 6 months old, when last went to local vet they said he had undecended testes and to Desex at about 5-6 months. I have since read research that suggests it is best to wait until about a year old to Desex a dachshund to help prevent back problems in the dachshund. I am happy to wait until one year but wasn't sure if undecended testes changes anything as to whether is should be done at 6 months? Thanks for any advice you can give!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it is find to wait until Nigel is 1 year old to neuter him. The descended testicle (cryptorchid) should be ok for another 6 months. Overtime (years) there is a risk that the retained testicle can become cancerous. Good luck!
