Why is my dog's itchy skin getting worse despite allergy meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 2 months old | 38 lbs

beagle is hypothyroid( diagnosed 2 years ago)she's medicated and her levels are stable. In the last 4 months her skin is terrible- itchy bumpy scabby - the vet thinks it's allergies and we have her on a food trial( right now on week 4 of 8) shes also taking prednisone and apoquel. we started with the steroid twice a day then went to once a day now she's taking it every other day and her skin is much worse than it was a before. She's covered head to toe in bumps could this be something else?

I'm sorry to hear of your concerns with Ziggy. From the pictures it appears that she may have a skin infection. Skin infection occur secondary to allergies frequently. I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian as Ziggy may benefit from medicated shampoos or antibiotics. I would also discuss Ziggy's medications with your veterinarian. Apoquel and prednisone both suppress the immune system and are typically not given at the same time.
