How to stop my cat from turning around to pee outside the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 lbs

Fawn uses her litter box , but turns around in the litter box and urinates so it goes outside of the box and the litter box is a very large litter pan with high sides.. She is the only cat that uses the pan. I have tried different brands of litter, but she still does it.

Unfortunately this has little to do with the litter or size of the tray, she likely doesn't evrn realise what she is doing, but has got into the habit of peeing like this. I think your best option would be to invest in a walk in covered litter tray because that way she cant miss.

This is a problem often encounter by cat owners. I recommend to make your own litter box. Sometimes it’s not always spraying, some cats do urinate standing up. Get a Rubbermaid container that is tall enough that she cannot urinate over the side. Cut a hole in it that is high enough that it seems unlikely that she will urinate out of the opening. To keep things even cleaner, place a puppy pee pad outside of the opening just in case some urine does come out. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
