How to stop my dog from eating grass, sticks, and leaves on walks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 9 months old | 62 lbs

My dog eats sticks, cut grass, leaves and other such items when I walk her. I often tell her to drop it or say no and she usually does. How can I break this habit?

Hi, this is quite the annoying problem you are having. First, you are doing the correct thing when telling her to drop it or give it to you. I would reinforce this with giving her a treat after she lets go of the object she's not supposed to have. Train her to keep her attention on you while walking by giving her commands randomly such as sit or wait, and reward her with a small treat. Then she will be looking to you for rewards instead of the ground for things to chew. Good luck, I hope this helps!
