My runt German Shepherd puppy was malnourished. Will she be okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Alsatian | Female | unspayed | 2.4 lbs

Hi we are buyin a German shepard runt puppy who is 2.4lb and 9 weeks old. She wouldn't eat really for the first 6 weeks. Then it was found out that her mum was resus - and pups was resus + and the puppies were being poisoned by mum. The pup has had 1 weeks antibiotic and is eating loads. My question is could the weeks of malnutrition of damaged her body and cause illnesses through life or could the fact she's eating now mean she can catch up!

It is impossible to give you a definite answer to this question. Certainly the poor start in life could have had a detrimental effect to the pups development especially its immune system. However, a lot of puppies that have had a bad start dont look back once they get into a good routine. My advice would be to keep the pup well up to date on vaccines, worming, external parasite control and feed a good quality puppy food such as royal canin/hills. You could have the puppies bloods checked when it is 6 months just to make sure its organs are doing well.
