My cat's eye gunk: Is its color normal or a sign of infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Offa had some eye gunk yesterday after waking up, They were almost off white in color. I washed them off & I've read that these colored gunk are symptoms of a possible infection. However after the notice, I gave him a good meal and some fresh water, some new cat treats, etc. Today after waking up, his gunk remained dark brown as always. Is this normal, should I check him up? If he stops reacting and starts acting very calm etc, are these signs of pain? Or am I just panicking? I don't know.

If the discharge is back to normal colour I wouldnt worry yourself overly. As long as the eyes look healthy, and there is no redness in the lids I would just keep cleaning them as usual. Cooled tea bags are a soothing way to clean the eyes. If the discharge changes or there is redness i would go to the vet as it may be a touch of conjunctivitis.
