My dog has cancer. Can she vomit feces while on palliative care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bernese Mountain Dog | Female | 10 years and 5 months old | 90 lbs

Hi, my 10 y.o. Female Bernese Mountain Dog's been diagnosed yesterday with what's very likely to be intestinal cancer (biopsy would confirm the diagnosis but we don't need it). Because of her age, we, along with the vet, decided not to proceed with surgery and rather consider euthanasia shortly. She's now been prescribed antiemietics, anti-inflammatories and pain relievers. I was wondering if it is possible that she'll start throwing up feces? Thank you A worried girl about to lose her sister

I am so very sorry to hear that your pet Lily has an untreatable cancer. Palliative care is really the best thing you can do for her at this point. Hopefully it is doing something to relieve her pain and give you'll a little more time with her before saying farewell. It is not common that a pet will vomit up feces. In fact, it is quite impossible considering their anatomy. Feces are located further down the intestinal tract, so a pet will usually vomit up bile if the stomach is empty and there are feces lower in the GI tract. Again I am so sorry for you and your pet Lily. I send my deepest condolences to your and your family through this difficult time. Take care.
