Should I take my cat to ER after neuter? Swollen face, pale gums.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 months and 26 days old | 5.5 lbs

Hello. My cat got neutered about 10 hours ago. His face is slightly swollen so I gave him 3 mg of Benadryl, and that was about an hour ago. His face is still swollen and his gums are pale but his nose is pink. He is also acting very lethargic and sleeping but I figured that's just because of the anesthesia. Should I take him to a emergency vet?

Hi, I am very sorry to hear about Tigley. Swelling and pale gums could be a reaction to some soft of medication/anesthesia he had earlier today. Any facial swelling is of big concern and I would absolutely recommend that he be seen by a an emergency veterinarian tonight. They will check all his vitals, do a thorough physical exam, and determine the appropriate treatment he may need. Make sure to take any records from his neuter today to your ER visit so the doctor can review what medications/injections he received. Best of luck to your sweet kitten.
