My budgie has tiny bugs. What are they and does she need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

I've just noticed on my new white budgie tiny little caterpillar looking things on her.shes been sharing a cage with my green budgie for 2weeks now, I haven't notice any bugs on the older one. I have now separated them. I don't know what it is or what to do please help. I called my local pet shop they advised mites and I must get her to a vet. Called emergency vet they said no rush if she's not acting strange. But I can bring her for £140 I don't have that kind of money

It does sound like she has a parasite infection. If she is well there is no need to rush her to the emergency vet as she has likely been living with these a while. Make her an appointment for normal hours and find out exactly what these are and the best treatment.

I would recommend a veterinary visit when the regular clinics are open. If both birds have been together even if you aren't seeing any lesions on your other bird if it is mites or a parasite you will likely need to treat them both. But it does require a visit to a veterinarian to accurately diagnose it and prescribe the correct medication. Over-the-counter treatments for mites on birds are at best not going to help and at worst can be extremely toxic.
