Why is my new mom cat licking her 2-week-old kittens excessively?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | unspayed

My siamese cat had kittens and is excessively licking the top of the kittens heads to the point that the fur is missing and starting to scab. I've read that they are prone to excessive grooming themselves. Is there anything I can do to stop her behavior. The kittens are only 2 weeks old.

Coco is just being a good mom--I wouldn't worry at this point, as she should calm down about the grooming as the kittens age. If she starts to become aggressive with you or them, you can ask your vet about anti-anxiety medication like Lorazepam, which works well in cats. However, I don't think you need to do anything at this point. Hope that helps!
