My puppy is limping but still putting weight on his leg. Is it okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | 5 months and 4 days old | 75 lbs

My puppy hurt his leg last night. (Great Dane). This morning he wasn't limping but this afternoon he is limping a little. If he is putting weight on it and not whining will his leg be ok?

IT doesn't sound like a fracture but you can never know for sure, give it 2-3 days, if it seems to get better then he will not need any treatment for it, if it gets worse or is no better then you will need to bring him to the vet in order to have an xray done.

You need to bring your puppy back to the vet and have a series of xray done as there is probably something serious causing the limping. Those xrays will probably need your puppy to be sedated as well.

If it just started you can let her rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, he might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

It is hard to evaluate on those x-rays but if she is still lame and having problems then you should go to another vet for a second opinion. You could also go to a veterinary orthopedic surgeon if there is one in your area. A specialist has more experience and will be able to evaluate your dog better.
