My cat has diarrhea and won't eat her food. What should I do now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 8.75 lbs

My cat woke up today going in and out of her liter box 3 times this morning. She just went again and I noticed she has diarrhea. About a quater size. She wouldn't eat her normal wet food today. She did eat some when I hand fed it to her. But she ate slowly. I tried baby food and she seemed to eat that ok. She sleeping, but doesn't look lathargeic. She went to the vet 6 days ago. All looks good. She's not a picky eater. She loves her normal food. I don't know what's wrong with her?

Diarrhea and a decrease in appetite could be a sign of a number of different problems. Intestinal parasites are possible, even for indoor cats, as are some infections or diseases like colitis or inflammatory bowel disease. If the diarrhea continues for more than 24 hours or seems to be getting worse, or if her appetite does not improve during that time I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian. They may treat her symptoms or recommend some testing like blood work or a fecal analysis depending on what they find during a physical examination.

Try adding warm water to her food or warming it slightly before feeding to stimulate her appetite. Sometimes a teaspoon or two of baby food mixed in can jumpstart the appetite as well. If she doesn't begin eating again in a day or two, have her rechecked by your vet.
