Adopting a cat exposed to FIV: Are my new cat and pets safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Himalayan | Female | spayed

We are looking to adopt an 8 year old Himalayan cat that is with a rescue home that has transported 5 FIV positive cats to another rescue home in another state. Could our adoptee cat be infected? Also we currently have a 1 1/2 year old Siamese cat that is healthy and 2 dogs. Will we be putting them at risk if we bring this new cat into our home?

FIV is transmitted by bite wounds, so there is little risk to your adopted cat. If you want to be sure you can always have her tested when she arrives. FIV is only a cat disease as well, so there is no risk to your dogs.
