Hi Dr, My 10yr jack russell had surgery almost 8mths ago to remove a non malignant thyroid tumor. Today after he persistently lifted his chin to me I noticed a swelling in the exact spot as his previous tumor. Was the surgery unsuccessful as I didn't do the chemo or radiation and the surgeon thought surgery should give him a prolonged life of 3yrs. Today I'm concerned and sad what should I do? Is it likely the cancer has returned and what is the prognosis on 2nd cancers?

It is a possibility the cancer returned, but just based on looking at the area alone, there is no way to know that. I would say not to worry about Rusty yet because we don't have all the information. I recommend taking him to your vet so they can stick a needle in the area to determine the cause of the swelling. If it is cancer, they can discuss the next steps and his prognosis. Kisses to Rusty!
