Is it true that feeding my cat only dry food causes kidney stones?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 11 months old

Hi, if I don't give my cat wet food and only give her dry food, will she develop kidney stones? She has vomited up wetfood in the past. That's why I stopped. And also for convenience.

Not necessarily. Good hydration plays a role in kidney stone formation along with genetics. You can do dry food only. As long as she drinks well, you can monitor for further signs. If she does develop an infection that may lead to stones you can always use a urinary health formula food

If she is doing well on the current diet don't change it unless your vet tells you it's OK. Giving anything else extra can change the urine pH which is why stones form. You should really consult with your vet on this as they have Isabella's entire medical history.
