My cat has high FIP titers and is 17 lbs. Is his weight healthy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 17 lbs

My cat had diarrhea/loose stools from Day 1 as well as URI symptoms. He was 15 lbs. when adopted. After five vet visits, he was diagnosed with FIP, but because the only thing that suggested FIP was the titer results (>1:6400)(other results were good), I went for a second opinion, and that vet gave him a prescription food and he got better. Restricted diet but he recently hit 17 lbs. 2/3 a cup a day, which isn't a lot, and he's active. Should this concern me? Should the titer results concern me?

The titer results may indicate that he has been exposed to the virus that causes FIP, which is present in lots of cats. FIP is difficult to diagnose and typically does not get better over time so it's encouraging that Jason is doing well! However 17lbs sounds like a lot. If there is a wet version of the food your vet prescribed I would consider trying that to see if that helps with some weight loss, as wet food typically has lower carbs than dry food. Generally cats need about 200 calories per day, so you can compare the calories per cup on the bag of food to what you're currently feeding him and adjust from there as well.
