My dog is distressed when alone. Should I kennel or let her roam?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 20 lbs

Roxy was previously kenneled all day with old owners. I left her alone for 1st time not in kennel today, when I returned she was whining/crying & seemed like she was hyperventilating almost. No accidents though and didn't destroy anything, but seemed very distressed for a long time after I got home. I'm wondering if she would be more comfortable if she was kenneled when alone, or if I should let her roam and get used to being alone?

Hi there! Trial and error is going to be the way figure out what makes Roxy most comfortable. It is certainly worth a try to kennel Roxy and see how she does. I would recommend doing a trial run by leaving her in the kennel and leaving the house for a hour to start and see how she does. If you have access to a means to record her while you're gone that would be even better. You can do the same thing with letting her roam. I would try each for at least a week before you make a final decision, she may just need some time to get used to being in the house alone. Hopefully this helps a bit. Best of luck with Roxy.
