My cat is sneezing with a swollen eye and discharge. What should I do?

Hi there. A few weeks ago my cat got sick from another cat we were babysitting. He got better but continued to sneeze. We just moved to a new place this week and he's still sneezing...and now he has one swollen looking eye with yellow greenish discharge coming out of it. I have some neomycin eye ointment from when our other cat was sick. Should i just use that? We cant really afford to take him to the vet right this second...we're tight on budget from moving. What do we do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Babu. If this ointment does not have steroids you may use it. If the ointment contains steroids I would shy away from using it unless directed by your veterinarian. If this is a viral upper respiratory infection, this may pass on its own, however if this is a bacterial infection you may need to take him to the vet to get antibiotics. Hope this helps.

    I'm concerned about this swelling, and it could be a growth in Merlin's nasal passage. This could cause the sneezing as well. It could also be a foreign body. I'd take him into a vet today to get this checked out. Best of luck.

It sounds like Bubba has a bad eye infection and may also have an upper respiratory disease causing the sneezing. This does have to be treated by a vet, as leaving any eye problem untreated can lead to vision loss. This cannot be treated at home. Please find the closest vet to you and take him into one now.

It looks like Kitty might have an upper respiratory infection causing conjunctivitis. A viral infection is most common, although secondary bacterial infections can also occur. A scratch on the surface of the eye could also cause redness and discharge but would not cause sneezing. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam. They can check for a scratch on the cornea or prescribe medications to treat a respiratory infection.

Something is wrong with my cats eye
Poor Bubby! It definitely does look like there is a problem with his right eye. Squinting, excessive discharge, and an elevated third eyelid are usually signs of conjunctivitis (either bacterial or fungal), or an injury to the eye such as a corneal scratch or ulcer. Bubby will need prescription eye drops to treat this, so I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to. He/she can use a special stain if needed to help determine what is causing the problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, you can try gently rinsing his eye with plain saline eye wash to help clean off some of the discharge. This will not treat the underlying problem, but it may help to make him a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

I would guess that Greggy has an upper respiratory infection. This can cause eye swelling and discharge from conjunctivitis along with sneezing and nasal discharge. A scratch on the eye might also be possible. If there are absolutely no vets around today (you might want to try travelling to see an emergency vet) then I'd recommend keeping Greggy comfortable until he can see a vet - he may need antibiotics and prescription eye ointment. You should make sure he's eating and drinking - you may want to try offering canned food if his appetite seems decreased.

They have a viral upper respiratory infection. I recommend gently wiping around their eyes and nose with a warm wet cloth to remove the eye and nose drainage If the discharge from the nose and eyes is yellow or green then they have a secondly bacterial infection and will recover more quickly if they get antibiotics from your veterinarian. Also should the cornea on the eyes turn white or not look clear please take them in right away for an exam as that could be a sign of a corneal ulcer which is a serious medical problem. They may take a week or more to get better and resting will help them heal. To encourage eating and drinking I like to feed wet food that has been warmed in the microwave for five to ten seconds. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. It sounds that Kitten has cat flu. I would suggest a visit at your local vets as Kitten may have fever, conjunctivitis, sore tongue or gums. A short course of anti-inflammatory medication and potentially pain killers will likely make him more comfortable.

Hello and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern! What you are describing sounds like Felix may have an upper respiratory infection causing these symptoms. There is not much at home you can give him to treat this. Many times these infections are secondary to a viral infection such as the herpes virus. You can start by giving Duralactin & Lysine supplement that comes in a tube for cats. You can find this at your local pet store or if you search online. If the symptoms are not improving or worsening, I would strongly suggest you get Felix to see a veterinarian for an exam and further treatment. I hope this helps! My other cats eye seems all swollen and puffy, it's watering alot and she's sneezing and her meow sounds shakey. Could this be allergies, or a cold? Should I call the vet?
In that picture, I can't tell if there is anything wrong with the eye. Puffy, red, watery eyes with nasal discharge in a cat is usually an indication of an upper respiratory infection. This could only be verified with a physical exam from a vet who would be able to rule out something else, like a primary ocular issue +/- allergies. If an upper respiratory infection is the culprit, antibiotics, eye medication, and immunoboosters usually do the trick with 7-10 days of treatment. Best of luck to you and Letty!

Hello. So one of my cats in sneezing a lot and has discharge from his left eye. The discharge from his eye looks clear and just like a tear. His sneezing is random and he sneezes repetitively for maybe 10 seconds kind of like a spasm.
This is probably an upper respiratory infection. it's very common in cats and is very contagious to other cats as well. It is treated with antibiotic eye drops/ointment and oral antibiotics for about 2 weeks. if left untreated many cats will end up blind or even die from the disease. I advise going to your vet asap to start the treatment right away.

My cats eye is closed and i am pretty sure it is mucus that is holding it closed because when I try to open it gently it is too hard and i dont know if i should try a little harder because I dont want to hurt her or if this will natrally go away. she
You could use a warm washcloth to get some of the mucous off of Cat's eye and hopefully allow it to open, but I wouldn't try too hard to open it. It is possible that she is holding it shut because it is painful as well. It sounds like she could have an upper respiratory infection, which is usually viral however if there is eye discharge she could have a secondary bacterial infection. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian so they can examine her eye and prescribe antibiotics or topical eye medication if necessary.
