Does hyperthyroidism mask kidney disease if blood tests are normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 17 years and 6 months old | 9.5 lbs

Dr Hinson, Thank you so much for your advice. May I ask you.. is it true that hyperthyroidism can mask kidney disease? Or should this not be a worry since his labwork is normal? Thank you!

Yes, it is true that hyperthryroidism (mostly the hypertension that goes with it) can mask kidney disease. Usually the kidney disease is unmasked once treatment to correct the hyperthyroidism is started as the blood pressure to the kidneys goes down. So, since Tony is already taking the appropriate medications for kidney disease and hypertension and has had blood testing to check his kidney values and they are normal, then I would say he is likely in the clear! I hope this answers your questions!
