Puppy can't poop after vet shots, bum is red and swollen. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 3 lbs

My puppy is 10 weeks old, shitzu Maltese mix. He went to the vet yesterday for his booster shots and exam. The vet said he is perfectly healthy and had no concerns. Today he is having a lot of trouble pooping. His but is red, swollen and tender to touch. He still eats soft puppy food and I feed him a small amount of puréed pumpkin everyday as he does have a history with constipation. Is there anything I can do to help him

The stress of being to the vet may have upset his guts and brought on a bout of constipation. I would apply a soothing cream to his bum such as nappy rash cream for babies, feed him some extra pumpkin. If he doesn't manage to go to the toilet by this evening I would take him to the vets as he may need more treatment.
