You need to get Max vaccinated against rabies ASAP! It is possible for him to get rabies from a rat but not likely. Any mammal can carry the rabies virus but it is more common to get it from bats or other wildlife, not really rats. Don't take any more chances and get his vaccinations as soon as possible! I hope the helps. Best wishes!

It would be quite unusual for a rat to carry rabies, so it's doubtful that this would be an issue in this case - although if your dog is not up to date on his rabies vaccination, I would definitely recommend having this updated regardless, as you never know what might happen. Even though rabies is unlikely, it's quite possible that your dog could develop some type of infection from the rat bite, so I would recommend having this checked by a vet within the next day or two if possible. He/she can prescribe antibiotics if needed to help prevent any problems.

Hi there! There is a very low chance that the rat will have rabies. Although it is rarely found in rodents, it's of course still possible. The best thing to do is to make sure that your dog's rabies vaccine is up to date. You can also call your local animal control to see about coming to pick up the rat and properly dispose of it, and possibly test it for rabies. Here is a some information about rabies from the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/exposure/animals/other.html

Hi, was Sparky up to date with his other vaccinations ? Did the rat bite him ? If he was up to date with his vaccinations, the risk of him catching diseases is very much reduced. If he was bitten by the rat, he should receive some antibiotics and his wound should be flushed. I would recommend that you have him checked over in the morning and in the meantime keep a close eye on him. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
