My dog's ear is swollen, discolored, with a fluid pocket. What is it?

Sonny's left ear. See how thick it is? The discoloration inside? I just noticed this. It appears to be a pocket of fluid. There is no obvious insect bite. The tissue is soft and clear when I shine the light through. The other ear is not discolored or thick. I can't tell how much it actually bothers him because he doesn't flinch when I touch it.

I am sorry to hear of your concerns for Sonny. It is good to know the ear doesn't seem to be painful. The thickening/swelling and bruising you have noticed make me wonder if Sonny has an Ear Hematoma. This is a collection of fluid (usually blood) between the cartilage layers of the ear flap. Given the discoloration visible on the outside of the ear I suspect Sonny has sustained some sort of trauma to his ear that has led to bruising and fluid accumulation. I would monitor the area carefully, and if it seems to be getting worse it starts to cause him discomfort then please have Sonny seen by your regular veterinarian for a full evaluation.
