My dog had SCC surgery. Now a lump shrinks and grows. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Puggle | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 36 lbs

Our dog recently turned 9 he had a side to side mandiblectomy in April because he had squamous cell carcinoma he was given clear margins however in June I noticed a spot on his left side. It hasn't grown but it does shrink and return to size. He's currently on clydamicin because he's vet felt it might be infection at the suture site from his original surgery. It's been 10 days and not much change. Any thoughts

The mass looks to me like a sialocoele - a cyst that fills up with saliva. However, given Nashville'a history of SCC, I strongly recommend that the mass be biopsies to determine what it is. Your veterinarian may choose to perform a fine needle aspirated or a biopsy depending on how the mass looks and feels.
